Dwarf Fortress How to Get Water Guide – Thirst & Well
Water must be consumed by dwarfs at least once every three weeks. In other games that use the thirst concept, you have to clean the water and store it properly before using it. But that’s not the case in Dwarf Fortress. Any body of water will do, even still and murky ponds, stagnant streams, and lakes. Be aware that pregnant dwarves will drink twice as much water as usual because the growing child “leeches” from her supply.
A dwarf always seeks out the cleanest body of water to quickly drink from. Over time, there can be some negative health repercussions the worse the quality.
You will need to use wells and fluid systems to pump water from the surface down to the well, where dwarves can then drink safely, because the deeper you go, the farther clean water will be from your dwarves.
So it is highly recommended that as soon as you can build a Well, here we leave you the guide to its recipe, ingredients and tips: Build a Well guide
Alcohol & Thirst
Alcohol is not directly related to thirst, it is not drinking water. But it’s a drink your dwarves are going to need for other reasons.
On the top menu, above the food, there is a quantity given for “drinks.” This is booze, not pure drinking water. Dwarves are extremely dependent on alcohol despite not needing it to survive. Their employment will suffer, as will their physical and emotional wellbeing.
Using a still, you can make your own alcohol. Ensure that there is always a supply. However, a dwarf cannot thrive on booze and will still require clean water.
